As more and more people are looking to travel especially to popular travel destinations, rental cars can be in high demand, especially during peak seasons. To secure the best rates and ensure availability, research and book your rental car well in advance. Online platforms and aggregator websites like Expedia and Travelocity make it easy to compare prices and options.
Check License and Age Requirements
Before hitting the road, familiarize yourself with the driving license requirements for each country you plan to visit. Some countries may require an international driving permit (IDP), so be sure to obtain one if necessary. For those that have AAA, it’s a very easy and straight forward process. You have the option to apply by mail or if you live in or near a metropolitan city, you can even apply and pick up your IDP at their office locations (only in the U.S.). Additionally, be aware of age restrictions, as they can vary from country to country.
Understand Local Traffic Rules
Traffic rules in other parts of the world can differ significantly from one country to another. Research the specific rules for each destination, including speed limits, road signs, and parking regulations. Keep in mind that some cities have restricted zones, and certain areas may only allow authorized vehicles. For example, in Italy, there are areas in most touristic cities that are restricted as ZTL. ZTL is short for Zona a Traffico Limitato or Limited Traffic Area and are zones restricted for limited traffic. These signs are everywhere but unless you knew what it meant, you wouldn’t know that parking in a ZTL area can get you a parking ticket and worse, have your car towed.

Selecting the right type and size of vehicle is crucial for a comfortable and practical journey. Opt for a smaller car if you plan to navigate narrow European streets and historic city centers. If you're traveling with a group or have a lot of luggage, make sure the vehicle provides adequate space but also make sure that if you choose larger vehicle that the city or country you’re can accommodate it. We’ve had an instance or two where I almost had a panic attack driving our cross-over vehicle through medieval towns in Europe.
Tip: We’ve only had good experience renting American sized SUV and minivans in the U.S. and East Asian countries. Everywhere else, we recommend smaller the better.

If you're not comfortable with manual driving, make sure to request an automatic transmission when booking your rental car. Keep in mind that automatics may be pricier and less common, so book in advance.
