LAYOVER IN ZURICH
Exploring Zurich: The Perfect Layover Before Heading to the Swiss Alps!
Our plan going into Zurich was to stay in the city as a quick layover before heading off to Grindelwald for our honeymoon in the Swiss Alps. For that reason, we didn’t have much planned for our 20-hour stay in this charming town. But as soon as we arrived at the Zurich Airport, we were already in awe and love with Switzerland. Even as we stepped into the airport, we could already see huge differences in Swiss engineering and infrastructure compared to the U.S. Compared to our airport back home, the airport was clean and sanitary, quiet, and very new looking. The airport was large and grand but with the numerous signs and directions that were everywhere, we quickly headed down the escalators to ride the city’s train which headed straight to the heart of the city — the charming Altstadt (Old Town).
Arriving at the Zurich Hauptbahnhof (main station), we took a stroll through its narrow cobblestone streets, admiring the history and marveling at the exquisite architecture. It was such a sight and experience to wander through the streets trying to find our hotel, passing by landmarks like the Grossmünster and the Fraumünster churches.
This reason alone is why we love Europe.
Where else can you walk through cities doing everyday tasks such as grocery shopping, getting a fresh cup of coffee, or having a nice evening job next to worldwide sites like the Grossmünster?
Indulge in Swiss Gastronomy
Zurich is a haven for food lovers, and you'll be spoiled for choice when it comes to dining options. We didn’t get to indulge in the famous Swiss fondue but the smell of melted Swiss cheese perfumed the city air. We did however have our fill of sampling some mouthwatering Swiss chocolate at one of the many chocolatiers plotted throughout the city. Be sure to try other local delicacies like Zürcher Geschnetzeltes (sliced veal in a creamy mushroom sauce) or traditional Swiss pastries.
While the French are globally recognized as having the best pastries in the world, the rest of Europe, including Switzerland, have delicious sweets and savory treats that rival even the French and you should try everything and anything. It’s THAT good.
Shopping in Bahnhofstrasse
If you love shopping as much as Mishi, make your way to Bahnhofstrasse, one of the world's most exclusive shopping streets. Here, we found a wide array of luxury boutiques, high-end department stores, and renowned Swiss watchmakers. Whether you're looking to splurge or simply enjoy window shopping, the glamorous Bahnhofstrasse is a shopper's paradise. But with Zurich being our first destination of our 2 week long honeymoon, we had no choice but to do some window-shopping, admiring the luxury goods from a safe and economic distance.
A Trip to Zurich's Museums
Zurich is home to numerous world-class museums that cater to all interests. Art enthusiasts can explore the Kunsthaus Zurich, which houses an extensive collection of masterpieces from renowned artists such as Monet, Chagall, and Picasso. If you're interested in Swiss history, the Swiss National Museum offers fascinating exhibits that chronicle the country's past. Moreover, the Museum Rietberg showcases an impressive collection of Asian, African, and American art. No matter your taste, Zurich's museums have something to offer inside and out. As is with most European museums, the architectural beauty that holds these priceless pieces are masterpieces themselves with long lasting history and a story to tell.
Enjoying the Zurich Lake
Before bidding farewell to Zurich, we took some time to relax and enjoy the breathtaking scenery surrounding Lake Zurich. Whether you opt for a boat ride across the lake or a leisurely stroll along its shores, you'll find tranquility in the midst of the city center's buzzing energy. Capture stunning photos, breathe in the fresh alpine air, and let the serene beauty of Zurich leave a lasting impression on you as it did with us.
Journeying to the Swiss Alps
With its efficient train system, Zurich served as an excellent starting point to reach our next destination in Switzerland. In our case, we caught our train from Zurich Hauptbahnhof (the main train station) to Grindelwald at the crack of dawn. We couldn’t help but become overly excited and started to imagine the picturesque landscapes and quickly became ecstatic to embrace the awe-inspiring beauty of the forthcoming Swiss Alps.
Zurich may be our layover destination, but for the short time we were here, we realized it had so much to offer. From exploring its captivating Old Town to savoring Swiss delicacies and indulging in remarkable cultural experiences, this vibrant city set the perfect tone for our Swiss Alps adventure.
